Having grown up in the large state of Texas, what stands out most to me about Rhode Island is how easy it is to get from one border to the other in less than 2 hours, North to South and East to West. Even when you drive the circumference of the state, it takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Rhode Island’s population is 1.06 million and it borders Massachusetts as its northern neighbor and Connecticut, to the South. The state has just 1,545 square miles, and the population figures mean that there are 1,018.1 people on average for every square mile. The state is second only to New Jersey in terms of density.
A bit of history: Rhode Island was one of the 13 original States and has had nearly its present boundaries since Colonial times. However, a long-standing border dispute with Massachusetts involved a sizable exchange of territory when finally settled by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1862.
Interesting how quickly intangible borders can become tangible lines that divide humankind.
